ITINERARIES
IN THE TUSCANY ARCHIPELAGO
There are innumerable possible sailing cruises
through the
Mediterranean. Toscanacharter will advise
you on the best one, according to your time
availability, interests and your sailing
preferences. We generally suggest a number
of easy to reach itineraries from Castiglioncello.
Nature gave these islands enchanted landscapes,
perfumes, sounds and colours fascinating
for travellers of every time. |

WEEK
END
According to
the preferences of the crew and to the weather
conditions there are many possibilities:
we advice to choose an island of the Tuscany
Archipelago and to circumnavigate it, to
be able to admire all its beauty.
|
| Elba:
you can reach it directly on Friday evening,
mooring in Porto Azzurro, inside the harbour
or in roads; on Saturday morning you can make
the tour of the island clockwise or anti-clockwise.
In the first case you will discover the promontory
of Monte Calamita, with its old mines, the
Gulfs of Stella, Lacona and Marina di Campo,
the impressive bay of Fetovaia and the whole
coast of Monte Capanne. If you choose the
anticlockwise tour, you will admire the coasts
of Rio Marina - Cavo, the small island Ortano,
turn Capo della Vita and reach the gulf of
Portoferraio, which is particularly attractive
to spend the second night. Or you can reach
Marciana Marina with its picturesque landscape
and comfortable harbour. On Sunday morning,
before returning back to Castiglioncello,
you can sail along the north side of Elba
and visit the bays of Viticcio - Biodola and
the white beaches of Portoferraio, paying
attention to the sandbanks of this area. |
Isola
del Giglio: you can reach the harbour
(Giglio Porto) leaving on Friday evening,
arriving late at night, or ideally, reach
the island on Saturday morning. The granodiorite
composition of its depth makes the sea around
the island so clear that resembles the Sardinian
coast. The village of Giglio Castello with
its high location is the largest one on the
island. Its castle, signal-station and the
old lighthouse are excellent points of reference
for anyone approaching the island. Giglio
Porto on the East side is the largest harbour
of the island. By night the harbour is illuminated.
It is possible to sail to Giannutri, to anchor
in roads and to have a walk on the island.
This island of 260 hectares preserves a historical-archaeological
heritage of Roman times, surrounded by crystal
clear water and Mediterranean maquis. From
the sea the island, located on the North-South
axes, appears flat with rocky configuration
and irregular coast. Mooring is only possible
at Cala degli Spalmatoi and Cala Maestra.
Cala degli Spalmatoi is protected from all
wind directions, except those in the 2nd quadrant.
 |
Capraia:
You can reach the island with a direct route
as well as staying over night on Friday at
Portoferraio or Marciana Marina. You could
then coast the island, admiring its wild landscape,
from the South side (Punta dello Zenobito),
where the old tower stands out of a breath
taking view. Being a volcanic island, the
rocks create a colourful palette between pale
grey and red dark. The West side of Capraia
is wild and steep. On the other hand, the
human presence is noticeable on the East side
of the island slopes partly cultivated. The
harbour still preserves an untouched landscape.
It is worth getting off the boat and walk
through the paths of the island, to see the
Corsican Seagull and the cormorant that still
live here. |

ONE
WEEK
Relaxing
cruise: enjoy the pleasure
of sailing and the tranquillity of the bays,
where you can swim and snorkel, and also
reach the islands for a walk. In this way
you can spend the whole week in contact
with nature. At night you can dine and enjoy
a bit of night life visiting the harbours
of the island. Following this lifestyle,
we would suggest a sailing between the islands
of the Tuscany Archipelago. Apart from the
islands introduced in the "weekend's plan",
there are further three more islands: Pianosa,
Gorgona and Montecristo. The first two were
in the past penal colonies, the third one
is an unspoilt natural reserve. In order
to visit Montecristo we suggest you to contact
the National
Park of the Tuscany Archipelago.
|
|
Pianosa
it was a prison for 142 years, being at
the beginning a penal colony and then up
to nowadays a high security prison. This
has kept the environment completely unspoilt.
It is a flat island full of tremendous sites:
the prairies of Posidonia, the most important
catacombs north of Rome, the Roman Villa
of Agrippina, the sanatorium of Punta Marchese
where Sandro Pertini was confined, a flora
and fauna characterised by many rarities,
due to an isolated evolution and an exceptional
migration. The island, made like a triangle,
is located south of Elba and the ground
above sea-level does not exceed 20-30 m
height. Since 1997 the sea around Pianosa,
for the radius of a marine mile, is part
of the National Park of the Tuscany Archipelago.
The dominant winds are Mistral and North-East
wind.
|
Gorgona
it is the furthest north island of the Tuscany
Archipelago. Looking from the sea, the west
coast seems bare and steep, the east side
seems more cultivated. This is also a penitentiary
island. Its natural potentials are giving
a great opportunity for social integration
of prisoners and also for experiments in new
ecological technologies. The main harbour
is Cala dello Scalo, recognisable for its
fisherman village. |
Montecristo the 'Island of granite', described by Dumas
in his famous novel "The Count of Montecristo",
has been in the collective imaginary of people
till nowadays. From the sea it looks massive
and high with a form of a cone. The coast
is rugged. It is a natural reserve since 1970
and it represents a small open-air natural
museum, with uncontaminated marine and terrain
ecosystems. The extension of the island is
1040 hectares, it is distant 63 km from Argentario
and 45 km from Elba. Its coasts are 16 km
long. Being a natural reserve, the access
to the island is only permitted via a booking
system. Contact former A.S.F.D. of Follonica
at tel. numbers 056640611 or 056640019. All
the territory of the island is owned by the
state and therefore the access, mooring, diving
in the zone 1 marine area are prohibited. |
